“A mighty woman with a torch”
Emma Lazarus is the author of the famed poem placed at the bottom of the Statue of Liberty. While most people are familiar with her most famous line, “Give me your tired, your poor, Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” In Emma’s poem, the speaker of that line is “a mighty woman with a torch.” In real life, Emma was herself a mighty woman that used her torch to help Jewish refugees facing death and anti-semitism in their home countries in Europe. Her poem was used to help fundraise for the construction of the Statue of Liberty. Both the statue and Emma’s words have become foundational symbols of American culture.
The nod to the Statue of Liberty’s crown is obvious on the heel of The Emma Lazarus sandal. The front is meant to emulate the folds in the statue’s dress, and an open toe was chosen since the statue herself has exposed toes. The sandals are handmade with real leather.
